What is wood art?

Chip Carving Woodart

Relief Carving Woodart
In this method, figures are carved in a flat panel of wood by removing wood from the wood surface in a way that the figures project slightly from the background creating a 3D effect.

In this method, the designer draws a picture on the wooden object. Though the art can be made in a variety of ways, to display a design, the artist usually uses paint and a paintbrush on a flat wooden panel.

This technique involves burning a design or picture on the surface using a heated metallic point to decorate wood or even leather which is known as pokerwork. Wood burning is also called pyrography which means ‘writing with fire’; the term includes Greek pur meaning fire, and graphics which means writing.

This type of wood art which is also known as Lichtenberg art or fractal wood burning is considered to be a dangerous process in which jumper cables are utilized to run an electrical current with a high voltage from a disassembled microwave or car battery across a piece of wood to create patterns which resemble lightning flashes on the wood surface.
Intarsia wood art
This method is the art of creating a mosaic-like picture using various shapes, sizes, and species of wood.
Geometric wood art
In this technique, different wood slats are used and assembled to create patterns.
To create rustic pictures like beach scenes and rural locations -which are considered to be the most popular themes- this form of woodworking folk art is used in which strips of lath and plaster walls are applied.
Wood mosaic art
In this method, the artist cuts the blocks of wood into the same geometric shape and then slices each block to create mosaic pieces. These individual pieces are then assembled into a full mosaic pattern.
This type of wood art can be used to decorate furniture using small pieces of colored wood or other material, applying the pieces to form decorative designs, patterns, or pictures on the structure.
